MATERNAL HEALTH: GROUP PARTNERS GIFA ON HEALTH OUTREACH TO RURAL COMMUNITIES IN A’IBOM

Carelife Character Foundation, a Non-governmental Organisation, in partnership with the Golden Initiative For All, GIFA, and support from other implementing partners, has concluded plans to embark on a three-week medical outreach for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children in the rural communities of Akwa Ibom State.

Mrs Margaret Etim, Director, Community Health Service, Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Agency, AKSPHCDA, stated this while speaking as a guest on GIFA Half Hour, a current affairs radio programme, produced by Media Unit, Office of the First Lady, Akwa Ibom State.

Mrs Etim, a representative of one of the partnering bodies, said that the Programme, known as Ibom Open Maternity (IOM) Project, is in commemoration of the United Nations’ World Breastfeeding Week, slated for 1st to 7th of August, 2025.

She further disclosed that the programme tagged “Strengthening Local and Sustainable Systems To Promote Effective Breastfeeding For Healthier Mothers and Children,” will offer health services such as ultrasound, mobile clinic service and nutrition service.

Other services are maternal literacy, nutrition, mental Health & Psychosocial Support, laboratory maternal diagnosis, early Childhood Development Screening, maternal Literacy and Empowerment, Health Education and distribution of relief materials.

Mrs Etim said that 5,000 pregnant women and teenage girls and 3,000 infants in seven Local Government Areas across the three Senatorial Districts of the state will benefit from the programme.

She mentioned the benefitting Local Government Areas to include Uyo, Ukanafun, Oruk Anam, Ikot Abasi, Ibesikpo Asutan, Nsit Atai, Eket and Nsit Ubium.

She hinted that the programme would kick-start with an advocacy road walk to take place at designated routes in Uyo on Friday, 1st August 2025.
