Ex-WBA champ predicts cagey Joshua, Wilder bout

By Adeyinka Adedipe

Former WBA Intercontinental light heavyweight champion Peter Oboh has said a potential bout between former world champions Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder could go either way.

Wilder recently called out Joshua after his victory over Derek Chisora on Sunday, while Joshua has yet to respond.

Oboh, however, believes the fight would be explosive but short-lived, predicting it would not go beyond the seventh round.

The former British and Commonwealth champion also expressed hope that Joshua would emerge victorious if the fight ends within that timeframe.

“The truth is that Deontay Wilder, Anthony Joshua, and Tyson Fury are not as good as they used to be. At a time, they were the three best heavyweights in the world,” he told The PUNCH.

“But not now—if you check the rankings, they are no longer among the top five across the major boxing sanctioning bodies.

“The top heavyweights now are Oleksandr Usyk and Moses Itauma. Nevertheless, if Joshua fights Wilder, it will be very interesting.

“I can bet £10,000 on Joshua and $14,000 on Wilder. Why similar stakes? Because it is a 50-50 fight. If both fighters bring their explosive styles, the bout won’t go beyond round seven.

“Note this: if you keep banging two irons together, sooner or later one—or both—will give way. I just hope it won’t be our own Joshua.

“The fight would have been a super fight a few years ago, just like a potential Fury-Joshua clash. If it happens now, it will still be interesting, but only a shadow of what it could have been.”
