Tobi Amusan pocketed $75,000 after finishing second in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary, on Friday.
The Nigerian clocked 12.34 seconds to finish behind American Masai Russell, who won in 12.22 seconds to claim the $150,000 top prize.
Amusan advanced to the final after finishing second in her semi-final in 12.49 seconds.
She was edged out by Devynne Charlton, who won the semi-final in 12.45 seconds, but the Bahamian could only finish fourth in the final in 12.40 seconds.
Russell, who also recorded the fastest time in the semi-finals, capped her dominant performance by claiming the $150,000 winner’s purse.
For Amusan, the silver medal brings the curtain down on a season in which she has continued to compete at the highest level despite losing her long-standing world record to Russell in Zurich.
The result marked the third consecutive time Russell has finished ahead of Amusan this season, having also beaten the Nigerian at the Zurich Diamond League, where she broke Amusan’s world record of 12.12 seconds.
In Zurich, Russell ran a stunning 12.09 seconds, taking three hundredths of a second off Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12 seconds at the Letzigrund Stadium.
Russell also finished ahead of Amusan at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, where the Nigerian placed fourth.
Before Russell’s record-breaking performance, Amusan had held the world record for four years after running 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
