GLOBAL ACCESS, DIASPORA OPPORTUNITIES: HON. LINDA AKON UMOH APPLAUDS GOVERNOR UMO ENO’S AVIATION MILESTONE

Uyo, Akwa Ibom State — The administration of Governor Umo Eno is actively repositioning Victor Attah International Airport as a premier aviation hub in Nigeria, with full international flight operations scheduled to commence in 2026. The initiative is designed to strengthen global connectivity, boost tourism, and expand economic opportunities for Akwa Ibom State and its diaspora community.

Hon. Linda Akon Umoh, Special Assistant to the Governor on Diaspora Matters, has described the development as a transformative milestone in deepening diaspora engagement and strengthening economic linkages between Akwa Ibom and the global community.

Speaking from her base in Ohio, United States of America, Hon. Umoh said the airport’s international upgrade represents “a strategic bridge reconnecting Akwa Ibom to its global citizens and unlocking new pathways for diaspora tourism, trade, and investment.”

“This development is timely and globally aligned,” she stated. “Across the United States and Africa, expanded air connectivity is reshaping diaspora engagement. New routes such as Delta’s Atlanta–Accra and United Airlines’ Washington–Dakar services are already reducing travel barriers, making it easier for the diaspora to reconnect with Africa.”

Central to this milestone is the role of Ibom Air, the Akwa Ibom–owned carrier, which will operate the inaugural international flight from Uyo to Accra on May 2, 2026. The airline’s expansion into regional international routes signals a strategic shift from a domestic carrier to a competitive player within West Africa’s growing aviation market, strengthening both passenger mobility and regional business travel.

The upgrade of the airport to international status follows presidential approval secured in November 2025 through the collaboration of Governor Eno and the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. The introduction of direct international flights eliminates the long-standing need for passengers to transit through Lagos or Abuja, significantly improving accessibility for Akwa Ibom indigenes in the diaspora.

Beyond passenger travel, the development carries major implications for trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Enhanced air connectivity is expected to accelerate the movement of goods, especially high-value and time-sensitive cargo, linking Akwa Ibom’s industries to markets across Africa and strengthening its role in emerging continental value chains.

The airport’s transformation is supported by extensive infrastructure upgrades, including a modern smart terminal, a 3-kilometre runway, and a near-completed Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility. These developments position the airport for expanded passenger and cargo operations in line with global aviation standards.

Crucially, the state is also advancing policies aimed at aviation technology development and structured knowledge transfer. Through partnerships with global aviation stakeholders and diaspora professionals, the government anticipates the introduction of training pipelines, certification programs, and technical exchange frameworks that will enable local talent to acquire internationally relevant aviation expertise. This includes opportunities in aircraft maintenance engineering, airport management systems, safety regulation, and digital aviation technologies.

The planned Aviation Village is expected to serve as a hub for this transformation—integrating residential, training, and operational ecosystems for airport workers and aviation professionals. It is designed not only to support workforce efficiency but also to foster continuous professional development, innovation, and skills retention within the state’s aviation sector. Diaspora returnees with specialized experience are expected to play a key role in mentoring and capacity building, ensuring that global best practices are embedded locally.

Hon. Umoh further highlighted that global aviation trends, including the growth of regional hubs such as Accra and Dakar and the expansion of Middle Eastern carriers like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines, demonstrate a shifting aviation landscape that favors stronger African connectivity.

She added that initiatives such as the Single African Air Transport Market are expected to further boost intra-African travel, reduce costs, and stimulate tourism and trade across the continent. “Africa’s tourism industry has the potential to reach over $300 billion in the coming decade, and diaspora engagement will be central to that growth,” she noted.

The Akwa Ibom diaspora office also emphasized that improved air connectivity directly supports heritage tourism, enabling diaspora populations to reconnect with ancestral roots while contributing economically to local communities through spending, investment, and business development.

According to Hon. Umoh, digital platforms and strategic outreach will remain key in engaging diaspora audiences and promoting Akwa Ibom as a preferred destination for tourism, investment, and cultural reconnection.

Economically, the initiative is expected to stimulate job creation across aviation, hospitality, logistics, and tourism sectors while boosting internally generated revenue and strengthening the state’s non-oil economy. At the same time, investments in human capital and aviation technology are expected to create a sustainable talent pipeline, positioning Akwa Ibom as a center for aviation excellence within West Africa.

Hon. Umoh reaffirmed that these developments align with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Eno, which prioritizes infrastructure development, economic diversification, and global competitiveness.

“As connectivity improves, so does opportunity,” she said. “We are building a system where global access translates directly into local prosperity, and where the diaspora becomes an active driver of Akwa Ibom’s development story.”

As Victor Attah International Airport moves toward full international operations, Akwa Ibom State is positioning itself not only as a key aviation and tourism gateway, but also as an emerging hub for aviation innovation, workforce development, and continental trade integration—deepening its global integration while strengthening ties with its diaspora community.
