In a major step toward improving infrastructure and enhancing road durability in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, the Chairman, Hon. (Elder) Aniefiok Nkom, has commenced a strategic collaboration with engineering experts from the United States of America to introduce advanced impermeable road construction technology in the area.
The partnership, involving Soil Control International, Inc. (SCI) and the University of Texas Technology Commercialized Enterprise, is aimed at deploying modern water-resistant, non-porous road technology designed to address the persistent challenges of road deterioration caused by flooding, heavy rainfall, erosion, and excessive dust during the dry season.
Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Nkom described the collaboration as a significant milestone in his administration’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure and sustainable development. He noted that adopting internationally proven engineering solutions would not only improve the lifespan of roads within the local government but also reduce maintenance costs while enhancing the safety and comfort of residents.
The visiting engineering experts, Mr. Scott Speer, Chief Business Development Officer, and Mr. Fernando Ramirez, Chief Operating Officer (COO), expressed confidence in the proposed project, assuring the Chairman that the technology has been successfully deployed in different parts of the world. They stated that the roads to be constructed would be highly durable, water-resistant, environmentally friendly, and capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions while serving the people effectively for many years.
Senator Emmanuel Ibokessien Essien, with his extensive experience in the construction industry, provided valuable technical insight during discussions. He engaged the engineering experts in detailed professional deliberations to ensure that the proposed partnership aligns with the infrastructure needs and development aspirations of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
As part of their visit, the American delegation toured several ongoing construction projects executed by the council to assess the quality of existing infrastructure and identify suitable locations for the proposed technology.
They also visited the renowned Raffia Craft Centre and the newly constructed Raffia City Mall site, where they were introduced to Ikot Ekpene’s rich cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and growing economic potential.
