The United States of America has warned Nigerians that overstaying their visas could jeopardise opportunities for fellow citizens seeking to travel for business or education.
The warning was issued amid President Donald Trump’s escalating immigration crackdown and travel restrictions.
In a post published on X on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria urged Nigerians to report visa fraud to AbujaFPU@state.gov or LagosFPU@state.gov, stating that ensuring compliance protects other responsible travellers.
The Mission said: “Visa overstay by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens.”
In an effort to combat visa overstays, the US government has begun taking action, focusing especially on citizens of nations like Nigeria who have high overstay rates.
The US has partially suspended the issuance of certain visa categories to Nigerian nationals, including B-1/B-2 visitor visas, F, M, and J student and exchange visitor visas, as well as immigrant visas, as part of the crackdown.
