MEA Energy deploys SmartPump across fuel stations

Indigenous oil and gas downstream company MEA Energy has partnered with Petrosoft, a global provider of end-to-end retail technology solutions, to deploy SmartPump technology across its fuel stations in Nigeria, as part of efforts to automate operations and improve customer experience in the downstream oil sector.

MEA Energy said the adoption of SmartPump technology will enable faster and easier self-service at its filling stations, while providing greater transparency, operational efficiency and real-time data visibility across its rapidly expanding retail network.

SmartPump is a proprietary solution developed by Petrosoft and designed to deliver specialised automation for fuel stations. The technology provides downstream energy companies with real-time oversight of fuel inventory, sales performance and pump accuracy, helping operators improve control across retail operations.

MEA Energy Trading Limited, which is based in Nigeria and is a subsidiary of a prominent United Arab Emirates-based commodities and trade finance consortium, said it has strong confidence in the SmartPump platform to power its growing network of retail fuel and liquefied petroleum gas stations nationwide.

Chief Commercial Officer of MEA Energy, Chris Vassilopoulos, said the partnership reflects a shared ambition between both companies to set a new benchmark for fuel retailing in Africa.

According to him, the collaboration represents the “Station of the Future” for the continent, combining UAE-backed financial strength with Nigeria’s technological innovation to drive growth in the downstream sector.

“Following an exhaustive global search for a technology partner capable of meeting the rigorous demands of the African energy market, MEA Energy identified Petrosoft’s SmartPump solution as the gold standard for automation, transparency, and operational efficiency,” Vassilopoulos said in a statement.

He noted that MEA Energy operates as a fully integrated energy company, with activities spanning fuel importation, wholesale and retail distribution, as well as logistics services covering ocean, coastal and overland freight.

“As we scale our retail footprint, the integration of SmartPump Technology will provide real-time oversight of fuel inventory, sales data, and pump precision, ensuring that MEA Energy continues to deliver world-class service to Nigerian consumers,” he added.

Vassilopoulos said the deployment of SmartPump aligns with the company’s broader mission to raise standards in Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas industry.

“Our mission at MEA Energy is to bring international standards of excellence to the Nigerian downstream sector, and by partnering with Petrosoft and deploying the SmartPump technology, we are not just buying software; we are investing in a transparent ecosystem that eliminates leakages and optimises our supply chain while guaranteeing our customers receive accurate dispensing at every visit,” he said.

Speaking on the partnership, the Chief Executive Officer of Petrosoft, Dr Joshua Denila, said MEA Energy’s adoption of SmartPump reflects a growing shift in how downstream operators across Africa are managing high-volume retail assets.

Denila said the SmartPump system was specifically designed to be resilient and adaptable and engineered to perform reliably in diverse operating environments, making it suitable for Nigeria’s expanding energy infrastructure.

He highlighted several key benefits of the SmartPump platform, including zero-loss integrity through advanced calibration monitoring and real-time tank gauging, which help eliminate product shrinkage and unauthorised syphoning.

Other features include remote management capabilities that allow operators to monitor station performance, change prices and audit inventory through a secure cloud-based interface, reducing the need for frequent physical site visits.

Denila also noted that SmartPump integrates logistics operations by linking fuel depots, tanker fleets and retail pumps, ensuring accurate tracking of every litre from transit to sale, particularly for companies like MEA Energy that manage their own transportation networks.

In addition, he said the technology enhances customer trust by ensuring automated and tamper-proof fuel dispensing, helping operators build long-term brand loyalty in an increasingly competitive retail fuel market.

Petrosoft said it remains committed to expanding its footprint across Africa as a global leader in back-office and retail automation, supporting downstream operators with technology that improves efficiency, transparency and accountability.
