Terem Moffi says he is proud to have captained the Super Eagles for the first time after leading the team to the final of the Unity Cup in London, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Moffi started and wore the captain’s armband for Nigeria on Tuesday in a 2-0 win over Zimbabwe in a Unity Cup semi-final match played at The Valley, Charlton Athletic’s stadium, in London.
The FC Porto striker delivered a positive performance and provided the assist for the second of the two goals scored by debutant Femi Azeez.
After the game, the striker reflected on the win and looked ahead to Saturday’s final.
“Captaining the Super Eagles was a proud moment for myself and my family, and I am really proud of the boys. They showed what we can do,” Moffi told Nigeria Football Weekly.
“At top level, I play as a sole striker, so it wasn’t difficult. We had Philip supporting as well.. and may we win on Saturday.”
Since making his debut
against Cameroon in an international friendly in June 2021, Moffi has made 20 appearances for Nigeria, scoring four goals.
The 27-year-old is currently at a crossroads in his club career, with Porto unwilling to pay €8m to secure his permanent move from OGC Nice.
He was sent to Portugal by Nice after allegedly refusing to play for the French club following reported abuse from supporters last year.
However, Porto have declined the option to sign him permanently for €8m, a decision that has placed the Super Eagles forward back on the transfer market, with a return to Nice also appearing unlikely.
According to reports, ES Troyes AC and FK Partizan are among the clubs now interested in the striker.
The 27-year-old, whom Nice signed from FC Lorient in a deal reportedly worth €22.5m, managed two goals and one assist in 15 appearances for Porto.
Before now, West Ham United FC had been long-time admirers of the striker after previously submitting a £25m bid in January 2023, when he was viewed as a possible successor to Michail Antonio.
Aston Villa FC also held discussions with his representatives during that period, while Italian side SS Lazio continue to monitor his situation as they search for more attacking depth.
French clubs, including Olympique de Marseille and Paris FC, are also reportedly monitoring the striker, while Turkish giants Fenerbahçe SK have maintained a long-standing interest.
