NIDEC 2026: Renewed Hope Turns Diaspora Engagement into Investment and Homeland Development

By Mfon Jacott

TORONTO, CANADA — AUGUST 12–15, 2026 — The maiden Nigeria Diaspora Investment Economic Conference (NIDEC) 2026 has opened a new chapter in Nigeria’s engagement with its global diaspora, placing investment, expertise, innovation, trade and economic partnerships at the heart of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Held from August 12 to 15, 2026, under the theme “Invest Nigeria, Thrive Abroad,” the conference brought together senior Nigerian government officials, governors, Canadian authorities, investors, entrepreneurs and members of the Nigerian diaspora around a shared objective: turning Nigeria’s global human and financial capital into productive investment, knowledge transfer, jobs and sustainable homeland development.

At the centre of the high-level Nigerian delegation was the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who led the Federal Government delegation as Special Guest. His presence underscored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to making diaspora engagement a practical instrument of economic transformation.

The delegation included the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye.

Also participating were Governors Charles Soludo of Anambra, Babagana Zulum of Borno, Uba Sani of Kaduna, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, alongside senior officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, Nigerian Export Promotion Council and NITDA.

Their participation gave NIDEC an important sub-national dimension: diaspora engagement is increasingly being positioned as a pathway through which states can attract capital, expertise, technology and global partnerships into bankable development projects.

For NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, NIDEC represents a deliberate shift from diaspora remittances for consumption towards productive investment. The conference was structured to connect Nigerians abroad with investment-ready opportunities while facilitating partnerships capable of generating jobs, technology transfer and sustainable development.

FROM ENGAGEMENT TO RESULTS

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, captured the results-oriented character of the conference when he declared that “this administration does not travel for jamborees. We travel for results.” He described NIDEC as a “deal room” for Nigeria’s growth under President Tinubu’s 4Ds Foreign Policy Agenda — Demography, Development, Democracy and Diaspora.

The message captures the central philosophy of Renewed Hope: international engagement must translate into measurable economic value at home.

NIGERIA–CANADA ECONOMIC RELATIONS: AVIATION AS A NEW BRIDGE

A major development surrounding NIDEC was the strengthening of Nigeria–Canada economic connectivity through aviation.

Just days before the conference, Canada announced an expanded air transport agreement with Nigeria providing for direct air services between both countries, including up to 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly all-cargo flights for designated airlines of each country, alongside fifth-freedom rights for all-cargo operations.

For the diaspora economy, the development is more than an aviation agreement. It strengthens the physical bridge for business travel, tourism, investment missions, professional exchange, trade and people-to-people relations.

The cargo provisions also create opportunities for stronger movement of Nigerian products into Canada and wider North American markets.

In practical terms, aviation can become an enabler of the diaspora investment ecosystem: people can move, businesses can connect, goods can travel and investment relationships can deepen.

CANADA–NIGERIA PARTNERSHIP

Senior Canadian officials, including Treasury Board President Shafqat Ali, Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism Graham McGregor, Ontario Minister of Women and Economic Opportunities Charmaine Williams and Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, participated in the conference, reinforcing its economic diplomacy dimension.

The objective is not simply to engage Canadians of Nigerian descent, but to use Nigeria’s diaspora as a bridge into Canada’s wider investment, technology, business and institutional ecosystem.

THE AKWA IBOM OPPORTUNITY
For states such as Akwa Ibom, NIDEC offers a compelling model for transforming diaspora engagement into investment attraction, knowledge transfer, skills mobilisation and international market access.

Bankable projects can be presented to global investors, while professionals of Akwa Ibom origin can become partners in technology, healthcare, aviation, tourism, education, energy, agriculture and other priority sectors.

This is where diaspora engagement becomes homeland development.

The ultimate measure of NIDEC 2026 will not simply be the number of delegates who gathered in Canada. It will be the investments that follow, businesses established, technologies transferred, partnerships sustained, jobs created and communities transformed.

NIDEC 2026 has therefore advanced a powerful Renewed Hope proposition:

THRIVE ABROAD. INVEST IN NIGERIA. CONNECT GLOBALLY. BUILD AT HOME.

For Nigeria and its states, the conference represents a decisive evolution in diaspora policy — from engagement as outreach to engagement as an economic development strategy.
