Young Nigerian thrower Prosper Nnamdi made history on Thursday, becoming the first Nigerian male athlete to win the NCAA men’s javelin title after a dominant display at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Nnamdi sealed the prestigious collegiate crown with a massive opening throw of 82.26 metres — a mark that went unchallenged throughout the competition.
Nnamdi stamped his authority from the very first round, and both of his throws beyond the 80-metre barrier confirmed the commanding nature of his victory on one of college athletics’ biggest stages.
The Nigerian finished ahead of Bahamas’ Keyshawn Strachan, who claimed second place with a best throw of 80.65 metres, while American Jack Larriviere took third with 77.91 metres.
The victory represents the latest milestone in Nnamdi’s rapidly developing career and reflects Nigeria’s growing presence in field events historically dominated by European and North American athletes.
His achievement comes on the back of a broader surge in Nigerian athletics, with the country producing world-class performers across sprints and field events in recent years.
By claiming the NCAA title, Nnamdi not only earned one of the most coveted honours in collegiate athletics but also planted the Nigerian flag on a discipline where the country had never before stood at the top.
The triumph is expected to sharpen his focus ahead of future international competitions as he continues to establish himself among the brightest young talents in global athletics.
