The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed its support for Team Nigeria as the country’s U-20 athletes prepare to compete at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, United States.
In a message on X on Thursday, the mission wished the Nigerian athletes success as they represent the country on the international stage, describing the championship as an opportunity for the next generation of Nigerian athletes to showcase their talent and determination.
“This is an opportunity for Nigeria’s next generation of champions to showcase their talent, determination, and excellence on the world stage,” the US Mission said.
The mission also highlighted the broader ties between Nigeria and the United States, noting that the participation of Team Nigeria in the championship reflects the connections between both countries through sports and other areas of cooperation.
“As Team Nigeria competes in the United States, we celebrate the connections that bring our two countries together through excellence in education, sports, technology, and many other areas,” it said.
The US Mission expressed confidence in the Nigerian athletes and wished them the best as they compete against some of the world’s leading young talents.
“Best of luck, Team Nigeria!” the mission said.
The 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships, branded Oregon 26, is the 21st edition of the global championship for junior track-and-field athletes. It is being held from August 5–9, 2026 at Hayward Field, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, USA.
More than 1,700 athletes from nearly 200 countries are expected to compete across track and field, combined events and race walking.
The championship features events including the 100m, 200m, 400m, hurdles, middle- and long-distance races, relays, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin, as well as the decathlon and heptathlon. The 2026 edition will also feature the mixed 4x400m relay, among other relay events.
