REA to launch renewable asset management company

The Rural Electrification Agency is set to launch the Renewable Asset Management Company on August 26, 2026, as part of efforts to promote long-term investment and sustainability in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.

The Managing Director of the REA, Abubakar Aliyu, said RAMCO was designed to provide a specialised platform for the professional management, optimisation and long-term sustainability of renewable energy assets.

In a statement on Thursday, Aliyu described RAMCO as Nigeria’s strategic answer to long-term energy financing, noting that the country needed institutions capable of connecting renewable energy infrastructure with long-term private capital.

“The agency is set to launch RAMCO on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Abuja, heralding a new era of advancing distributed renewable energy access in Nigeria,” Aliyu said.

He said Nigeria had significant renewable energy opportunities, given its large population, abundant solar resources, growing renewable energy developer ecosystem and the legal framework provided by the Electricity Act 2023.

The REA boss said RAMCO could serve as a bridge between public infrastructure and private investment if properly structured and commercially disciplined. He explained that the initiative would help shift the focus from infrastructure deployment alone to asset sustainability, productivity and capital recycling.

Aliyu said the model could enable capital deployed into mature renewable energy assets to be refinanced or recycled, subject to appropriate commercial and regulatory structures, with proceeds potentially used to support new projects.

He said this could reduce the country’s dependence on government budgets, sovereign borrowing and development finance for expanding electricity access.

The REA managing director also identified asset maintenance as a critical issue in the renewable energy sector, noting that solar panels, batteries, inverters and other components had different operating lifespans and required continuous maintenance and replacement.

He said effective asset management would therefore have to cover equipment maintenance, revenue collection, customer demand, operator performance and the overall financial health of renewable energy projects.

Aliyu stressed that attracting long-term capital was important because Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure needs were too large to be financed by the government alone.

He said the country’s renewable energy strategy must therefore focus not only on installed capacity but also on the efficient management of electricity infrastructure and mobilisation of capital for continued expansion.

The REA boss said the success of RAMCO would ultimately be measured by the number of renewable assets kept productive, private capital attracted, distressed projects restored and capital recycled into new electrification projects.
