Retirees Rejoice: Gov. Umo Eno’s N28billion Gift

In a bold reaffirmation of his commitment to the welfare of retired workers and the broader community, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has taken a significant step forward by approving the disbursement of N6.43 billion for the payment of gratuities and other entitlements. This latest financial commitment, which brings the total disbursement since Eno assumed office to over N28 billion, is not just a fiscal maneuver; it is a loud statement to a principled approach to governance that seeks to uplift the most vulnerable segments of society while fostering a climate of trust and accountability.

The breakdown of this substantial allocation speaks volumes about the governor’s priorities. One billion naira is designated for the gratuities of retired primary school teachers, a group that has long relied on the state’s benevolence after years of dedicated service. Meanwhile, N500 million is set aside for retired local government workers, and an impressive N2.22 billion is allocated for state civil service retirees. This structured approach demonstrates an understanding of the diverse needs of public servants who have contributed significantly to the development of the state. In a society where the welfare of retirees is often neglected, this proactive stance is both refreshing and necessary.

But Governor Eno’s vision extends far beyond financial disbursements. Under the Arise Agenda, his administration is pioneering a multifaceted approach to governance that intertwines social welfare with infrastructural development. The Arise Compassionate Homes Initiative, which aims to construct affordable housing for the poorest citizens, is a prime example of this vision in action. With 36 fully-furnished bungalows already completed and 164 more under construction, the governor’s ambition to deliver 400 units by the end of his first term reveals a relentless drive to combat poverty and improve living conditions for the most vulnerable.

Additionally, the Arise Elderly Care Initiatives, which provide N50,000 monthly to 600 elders across the state’s 368 wards, reflect a deep-seated commitment to honoring the elderly population. This initiative not only helps alleviate financial burdens but also fosters a sense of dignity and respect for those who have paved the way for future generations. In a society that often marginalizes its aging citizens, such measures are not just commendable; they are essential.

Education, a cornerstone of any progressive society, is another domain where Governor Eno is making significant strides. By ensuring that WAEC fees are covered for all students and providing bursaries for those with disabilities, his administration is dismantling financial barriers that hinder educational opportunities. This commitment is yielding tangible results, as evidenced by the increasing pass rates among students.

Infrastructure development remains a critical focus of Governor Eno’s administration. The ongoing construction of roads, the flood control tunnel on Atiku Abubakar Way, and the ambitious Arise Park project—all point to a transformative vision aimed at enhancing the state’s livability and economic potential. These projects are not merely aesthetic improvements; they are investments in the future of Akwa Ibom, designed to stimulate economic growth and attract investment. The transformation of previously desolate areas into thriving hubs speak volumes of the governor’s foresight and determination.

However, it is not just the tangible projects that resonate; it is the underlying philosophy that drives them. Governor Eno has consistently articulated the need to grow the people and improve their material well-being, a vision that aligns with the aspirations of the Akwa Ibom populace. In a political landscape often marred by corruption and mismanagement, his transparent approach to governance is a plus. The gratitude expressed by citizens towards the humanitarian interventions, coupled with the state’s infrastructural upgrades, is the belief that governance can indeed be a force for good.

As Akwa Ibom continues to rise under Governor Eno’s stewardship, it is evident that the state is on a transformative path. The integration of social welfare with infrastructural development is not merely a strategy; it is a holistic approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of economic stability, social equity, and community development. In a time when many leaders struggle to balance these elements, Governor Eno’s administration stands as a model of effective governance.

The Akwa Ibom State Government has reiterated its commitment to supporting elderly citizens through the A.R.I.S.E Initiative, a welfare program aimed at addressing the challenges faced by senior citizens.

This was highlighted during the July edition of the A.R.I.S.E Initiative program held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Uyo, with Pastor Mrs. Patience Umo Eno and other dignitaries in attendance.

The Coordinator of the A.R.I.S.E Initiative, Mrs. Mercy Eka, in her address stated that the program is very significant most especially in improving the well-being of the elderly in rural communities across the state. Mrs. Eka described the initiative as a critical part of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda, designed to give 600 elderly citizens monthly stipends, healthcare services, and social support, with beneficiaries selected from all 31 Local Government Areas, including non-indigenes.

She acknowledged the inspiration for the A R.I.S.E Initiative from the “Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme,” established by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON. “Very soon, the Governor will ensure the implementation of this policy, further solidifying the government’s commitment to the well-being of our elderly citizens,” She said.
