A Nigerian, Christian Promise, has died in police custody in Rajouri Garden, West Delhi, India.

The 32-year-old, who arrived in India on a student visa, was arrested on Sunday by a team of five police officers while riding on the wrong side of the road.

A police officer told local media that Promise rammed his scooter into a police motorcycle, fell to the ground, and sustained injuries.

He reportedly tried to flee on foot, fell again, and was apprehended.

“While being taken to the Special Staff office, he complained of uneasiness. He was later taken to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” the officer said.

The magistrate court in New Delhi has ordered an investigation into his death.

Police said a post-mortem will be conducted only after consent is obtained from Promise’s relatives or the Nigerian embassy.
