UCCDA clears unauthorized market at Mbiaobong Ayanya
Uyo Capital City Development Authority today moves to clear an unauthorized fish market opposite the Timber market at Oron Road, Uyo. This road leads to our prestigious Ibom Airport but always experiences traffic congestion due to this market which has taken over an entire lane disrupting the flow of pedestrians and vehicles alike.
Apart from blocking the sidewalk and lanes, this illegal trading spot poses grave sanitation issues as the drainages around the area are filled by refuse.
At the time of filing this report, News men spoke with one of the traders, Mrs Alice Effiong, who agreed that there is a newly built market, Urua Mbiaobong Ayanya meant to accommodate them but they prefer the roadside because of accessibility and availability of customers. According to Alice, customers rarely walk down to where the market is situated.
Representatives of the Mbiaobong Ayanya Community present during the clearing exercise, the Youth Adviser, Mr Ubong Akpaeno, Youth Secretary, Mr
John Effiong Okon, and Mr Ofonmbuk Aniedi,
Community Members promptly registered their apology to the Akwa Ibom State Government having seen how defaced the aesthetic view of the area is. According to their spokesman, Mr Akpaeno who frowned at the heap of refuse littered on the tarred road by the market women begged that the village Council will address the traders and further educate them on the menace of forming a market on the tarred road and promised that they traders will be moved to the appropriate market.
